AWS Glue Data Catalog adds S3 metadata exports and KMS encryption support for semantic search
AWS Glue Data Catalog's preview now includes exporting metadata to S3 Tables for querying and expanded semantic search for KMS-encrypted catalogs. This enables richer analysis by allowing users to query, audit, and perform time travel on catalog metadata alongside other AWS service data. The new capabilities are available in select AWS regions and benefit users working with complex data catalogs, especially those requiring enhanced security or detailed historical analysis.

- →Metadata export enables richer data analysis and auditing
- →Region availability for new Glue Data Catalog features
Features (1) ›
- Export Glue Data Catalog metadata to S3 Tables
AWS Glue Data Catalog now supports exporting technical and business metadata to S3 Tables in Apache Iceberg format. This enables querying, auditing, and time travel on catalog metadata using standard SQL with tools like Amazon Athena and QuickSight.
Enhancements (1) ›
- Semantic search preview expanded to KMS-encrypted catalogs
The preview for semantic search in AWS Glue Data Catalog is now expanded to support catalogs encrypted with AWS KMS customer managed keys. This allows for business context enrichment and semantic search even on securely managed data.
Notes (2) ›
- Metadata export enables richer data analysis and auditing
Exporting catalog metadata to S3 Tables allows users to join it with other AWS service data for analysis, such as auditing glossary usage and metadata changes. The metadata is stored in a managed S3 bucket, and standard S3 pricing applies.
- Region availability for new Glue Data Catalog features
These new capabilities are available in the US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (Oregon), and Europe (Ireland) AWS Regions.
