Azure Files now offers several new features to accelerate modern Linux workloads, including AI, cloud-native, and enterprise modernization scenarios. These enhancements include improved performance through NFS nconnect, zonal placement for reduced latency, and faster provisioning for Kubernetes. The updates aim to help organizations run shared file storage in Azure more efficiently and cost-effectively.

  • Accelerate AI and data-intensive workloads with improved performance
  • Scale cloud-native applications with enhanced Kubernetes integration
  • Modernize enterprise applications with managed NFS shares
  • Improve business continuity and governance for enterprise workloads
  • Expand partner and ISV ecosystems with standard protocols
Features (3)
  • Accelerate AI and data-intensive workloads with improved performance

Azure Files now supports the NFS nconnect mount option for multiple parallel TCP connections, enhancing throughput. Zonal placement co-locates file shares with GPU VMs to reduce latency, and the provisioned v2 billing model allows independent sizing of IOPS and throughput for better cost efficiency and faster scaling.

  • Scale cloud-native applications with enhanced Kubernetes integration

The Azure Files CSI driver integrates with Azure Kubernetes Service for dynamic provisioning, expandable volumes, and ReadWriteMany access. New file shares provision up to 2.5 times faster, and the provisioned v2 model allows incremental capacity growth and utilization monitoring for cost management in multi-tenant or high-density environments.

  • Modernize enterprise applications with managed NFS shares

Azure Files provides managed NFS file shares for Linux workloads, preserving familiar access patterns for applications like SAP that depend on POSIX-compliant semantics. Support for Azure Storage Mover and Azure Migrate, along with partner tools, simplifies the migration of existing Linux and NFS environments into Azure.

Enhancements (2)
  • Improve business continuity and governance for enterprise workloads

Features like snapshots and soft delete enhance recovery options for business-critical data. NFS encryption in transit secures data, and Azure networking options provide resilience. The new file share experience also simplifies governance, cost tracking, and granular network configuration.

  • Expand partner and ISV ecosystems with standard protocols

Azure Files exposes industry-standard SMB 3.x and NFS 4.1 endpoints, enabling compatibility with existing applications and tools. New capabilities like NFS Snapshot, Soft Delete, and REST API for NFS shares allow partners to integrate Azure Files into broader solutions for data management and application enablement.
