Azure HBv2-series VMs to be retired May 31, 2027

Microsoft Azure will retire HBv2-series virtual machine sizes on May 31, 2027. To ensure continuity and performance, users are advised to transition to current-generation Azure HPC VM families like HBv5-series or HX-series. After the retirement date, any remaining HBv2-series VMs will be deallocated, lose SLA coverage, and stop incurring charges, with RI purchases ending April 2, 2026. Users must resize or deallocate their HBv2-series VMs before the retirement date.

  • Retirement of Azure HBv2-series VM sizes

    Specific HBv2-series virtual machine sizes, including Standard_HB120rs_v2 and others, will be retired on May 31, 2027. Following this date, these VMs will be deallocated, cease to function, and will no longer be covered by SLA or included support. Additionally, 1-year and 3-year Reserved Instance purchases for these VMs will end on April 2, 2026.

  • Recommended migration to newer HPC VM families

    Users are recommended to transition their workloads from the retired HBv2-series VMs to newer HPC-optimized SKUs. Options include the Azure HBv5-series VMs, offering higher performance and better price-performance, or the Azure HX-series VMs, optimized for high-memory HPC workloads with double the memory capacity of HBv4.
