Azure Standard HDD OS Disks Retirement on September 8, 2028

Azure will retire service for OS disks running on Standard HDD on September 8, 2028, to align with evolving disk performance and reliability needs. Standard HDD data disks and ephemeral OS disks are not affected. After the retirement date, OS disks on Standard HDD will be automatically converted to Standard SSD of equivalent size unless migrated sooner, potentially causing service disruption.

    Service for OS disks running on Standard HDD will be retired on September 8, 2028. This change is driven by an evaluation of the product portfolio to meet evolving customer needs and improve disk performance and reliability. Standard HDD data disks and ephemeral OS disks will not be affected.

  • Automatic Conversion and Required Action

    After September 8, 2028, any remaining OS Disks on Standard HDD will be automatically converted to Standard SSD of equivalent size if not migrated by the customer. To avoid potential service disruption, customers are advised to stop using HDD OS Disks for new virtual machines and migrate existing HDD OS Disks to Standard SSD or Premium SSD before the retirement date.
