Azure VM Desired State Configuration Extension to be retired March 2028

The Desired State Configuration Extension for Azure Virtual Machines is scheduled for retirement on March 31, 2028. Users are encouraged to migrate to Azure Machine Configuration before this date to leverage its enhanced capabilities. The extension will remain functional until the retirement date, after which it will no longer be supported. Azure Machine Configuration offers native ARM assignment, Azure Policy integration, controlled remediation, multi-configuration management, advanced reporting via Azure Resource Graph, and unified PowerShell-based DSC resource consumption for both Linux and Windows.
