GitHub Copilot Deprecating Models in August 2026
GitHub Copilot will deprecate several AI models across all its experiences on September 1st, 2026. This change affects users and administrators who rely on models like Gemini 3.1 Pro and various Claude Opus/Sonnet versions, requiring updates to alternative suggested models. Administrators must enable new model policies, while individual Copilot subscribers on annual plans retain access to Claude Sonnet 4.6.
- →Gemini 3.1 Pro and multiple Claude models to be deprecated
- →Claude Sonnet 4.6 exception for annual individual plan subscribers
- →Administrator action required for new model enablement
- →No action needed for model removal post-deprecation
Deprecations (1) ›
- Gemini 3.1 Pro and multiple Claude models to be deprecated
GitHub Copilot will deprecate Gemini 3.1 Pro, Claude Opus 4.5, Claude Opus 4.6, Claude Sonnet 4.5, Claude Sonnet 4.6, and Raptor Mini on September 1st, 2026. Suggested alternatives include Gemini 3.6 Flash, Claude Opus 4.7/4.8/5, Claude Sonnet 5, and MAI-Code-1-Flash.
Enhancements (1) ›
- Administrator action required for new model enablement
Copilot Enterprise administrators need to enable access to alternative models through their model policies in Copilot settings. Administrators can verify availability and enable policies within their Copilot settings to see new models in the Copilot Chat model selector.
Notes (2) ›
- Claude Sonnet 4.6 exception for annual individual plan subscribers
Individual GitHub Copilot subscribers on annual plans will retain access to Claude Sonnet 4.6. This exception means the deprecation of Claude Sonnet 4.6 does not apply to these specific customers.
- No action needed for model removal post-deprecation
Users and administrators do not need to take any action to remove the deprecated models once they have been phased out. GitHub Enterprise customers with concerns are advised to contact their account manager for assistance.
