Google Cloud adds AI cost controls: anomaly detection and spend caps
Google Cloud is introducing two new native features in the Billing console to help manage generative AI costs: early anomaly detection on AI services and spend caps on Budgets. These tools allow users to proactively identify unusual AI spending trends and enforce financial limits, mitigating the risk of unexpected cost spikes. The features are currently in Public Preview, with early anomaly detection supporting services like Gemini API and Cloud Run, and Spend Caps applying to specific projects and services.

- Early anomaly detection for AI services
A new feature in the Billing console's Anomalies tool automatically alerts users to directional variances in daily AI costs within a project, using dynamic baseline modeling and early cost monitoring. It includes automated triage with Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to highlight the top SKUs driving cost surges.
- Spend caps for Google Cloud Budgets
This new native feature on Google Cloud Budgets allows users to set monthly financial caps on specific services within a project. When the accumulated spend reaches the defined cap, the system automatically restricts further cost-incurring usage for that service within that project, with near real-time enforcement.

- Spend caps are non-destructive and offer manual recovery
Spend caps are designed to be non-destructive, meaning data and resources are not deleted, and unaffected services remain operational. If a spend cap is triggered, usage is blocked until manually lifted via the Google Cloud Budgets UI, and billing administrators receive alerts at 50%, 80%, and 100% thresholds.
- Public Preview availability and supported services
The Spend Caps feature is currently in Public Preview and can be applied to a single project and service for a fixed monthly timeframe. Both Early Anomalies and Spend Caps support services including Gemini API, Agent Platform, Cloud Run, and Cloud Run Functions.
