Google Cloud has upgraded its Carbon Footprint model to version 17, reflecting updated methodologies and data sources for its July 2026 data release. This enhancement incorporates refreshed Scope 1, 2, and 3 allocation factors, annual renewable electricity percentages, and background emissions factors from the 2026 Google Environmental Report. The update aims to provide more accurate carbon accounting by including granular certificates and aligning European clean energy matching boundaries with RE100 criteria. Customers are advised to prioritize regions with high Carbon Free Energy (CFE) scores for new workloads to minimize emissions.
