Snowflake Integrates with STACKIT to Boost EU Data Sovereignty

Snowflake has partnered with Schwarz Digits' cloud STACKIT to offer enhanced data sovereignty options for EU customers, particularly in Germany. This integration combines Snowflake's data and AI capabilities with STACKIT's EU-based data hosting and European encryption key systems, addressing strategic priorities for regulated industries like finance and healthcare.

The integration provides transparent, EU-based encryption and third-party access controls, ensuring customer data remains secure and detectable for unwanted access. Encryption key ownership and control are maintained within STACKIT's EU-based infrastructure, specifically designed to support data sovereignty and regulatory requirements under European law.

Customer data is stored in the open-source format Apache Iceberg, guaranteeing accessibility and operability even if primary technology vendors are unavailable. This approach prevents vendor lock-in, allowing customers to continue accessing and using their data with other open-source tools without complex migrations.

The collaboration ensures extensive compliance, with both Snowflake and STACKIT independently holding BSI C5 certifications, crucial for Germany's regulated industries and critical workloads. This builds upon Snowflake's existing certifications, including ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II, and TISAX, to meet stringent European regulatory standards.

Snowflake and STACKIT are committed to exploring further opportunities to deepen their strategic collaboration. This includes developing a roadmap for a more complete integration of Snowflake's offerings to achieve fully sovereign deployments on the STACKIT platform in the future.
