Amazon Cognito now offers self-service rate limit management
AWS details a new capability for Amazon Cognito called provisioned limits, which allows customers to adjust authentication rate limits on-demand through the AWS Management Console. This feature addresses the previous 10-14 day wait time for manual adjustments via support tickets, enabling self-service scaling for traffic spikes and cost optimization. The system works with existing account-level maximum limits set in AWS Service Quotas, providing immediate control over authentication capacity for businesses with seasonal demand or unexpected growth.

- Provisioned limits and account-level maximums work together
The new provisioned limits feature complements account-level maximum limits managed via AWS Service Quotas. Provisioned limits are adjusted in the Cognito console and are billed for capacity above the default limit, while the account-level max limit in Service Quotas acts as a ceiling. Customers can request increases to the account-level max, with most requests automatically approved within minutes, enabling them to then adjust provisioned limits accordingly.
- Programmatic management for SaaS providers
The UpdateProvisionedLimit API allows for programmatic management of provisioned capacity, which is beneficial for SaaS providers managing multi-tenant environments. This enables infrastructure-as-code integration for adjusting provisioned limits per tenant tier, allowing for differentiated capacity management based on tenant service levels.
