Amazon EventBridge Relaunches Custom Event Buses for Enterprise Scale

Amazon EventBridge has relaunched its Custom event bus with an enhanced version, enabling organizations to build highly scalable event-driven applications with decoupled teams. This serverless event broker routes events between applications, SaaS integrations, and AWS services, providing strict ordering and support for advanced event transformations.

The enhanced Custom event bus can now be shared across AWS accounts using AWS Resource Access Manager, allowing different teams or accounts to publish and consume events from a central bus. It also supports publishing events in popular JSON-based formats, including CloudEvents, while preserving their original schema.

Custom event buses now include 24 hours of built-in retention, with an option to extend this up to one year, facilitating recovery from application errors or hydrating new components with historical data. A new Subscriber resource allows users to filter events and deliver them to over 250 different AWS services.

Native support for strictly ordered use cases ensures events are processed in the exact sequence they were received, which is crucial for maintaining data consistency. New event evaluations also provide automatic content-based deduplication to prevent redundant processing.

A new pricing model has been introduced that charges for data transferred instead of per-event, designed to offer lower costs as workloads scale. The enhanced Custom event bus is available in fourteen AWS Regions at launch, including regions in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific.

To distinguish between the existing and the new enhanced Custom event bus, the previous version has been renamed to 'Custom event bus - classic'. All existing APIs for the classic version remain unchanged, ensuring backward compatibility.
