AWS launches EC2 R9g and R9gd instances powered by Graviton5 processors

AWS has announced the general availability of Amazon EC2 R9g and R9gd memory-optimized instances, featuring the new AWS Graviton5 processors. These instances deliver up to 25% better compute performance than Graviton4, with faster DDR5 memory, larger L3 cache, and increased network/EBS bandwidth. Designed for memory-intensive workloads like databases, in-memory caches, and real-time analytics, R9g instances are also AWS's most energy-efficient to date. R9gd variants include fast local NVMe SSD storage, and both types incorporate the Nitro Isolation Engine for enhanced security.

    The new instances feature the Nitro Isolation Engine (NIE), an enhancement to the Nitro System that enforces isolation of instances and leverages formal verification. NIE ensures isolation between virtual machines, mediating access to memory, CPU state, and I/O devices through a minimal API set, establishing a mathematically proven standard for cloud security.

The R9gd variants further include local NVMe-based SSD block-level storage for workloads requiring fast, low-latency scratch space.

Workloads running on R8g instances can migrate to R9g for improved performance without code changes.

  • Instance Bandwidth Configuration and Nitro System Integration

    R9g and R9gd instances support Instance Bandwidth Configuration (IBC), allowing users to adjust bandwidth allocation between Amazon EBS and VPC networking. All instances run on the AWS Nitro System, offloading virtualization, storage, and networking to dedicated hardware for near-bare-metal performance and strong security isolation.

    R9g and R9gd instances are ideal for memory-intensive Linux-based workloads, containerized and micro-service applications, and support popular programming languages. Migration from R8g typically requires no code changes, and multi-arch container images for Arm64 run without modification.   • Regional Availability and Flexible Purchase Options

    Amazon EC2 R9g and R9gd instances are available in US East (N. Virginia, Ohio), US West (Oregon), and Europe (Frankfurt) Regions.
