CloudWatch OTel Container Insights for EKS Launched

observabilityawsengineer
feature

Amazon CloudWatch now offers OTel Container Insights for Amazon EKS, collecting infrastructure metrics at 30-second granularity using open-source receivers and OpenTelemetry semantic conventions. This feature simplifies correlating metrics across your Kubernetes workloads and provides immediate visibility through pre-built dashboards or existing Prometheus and Grafana setups via the CloudWatch PromQL endpoint. It's available via the EKS console or CloudWatch Observability add-on, Helm, or CloudFormation.

  • Collect EKS Infrastructure Metrics with OTel Container Insights
  • Correlate Metrics with Kubernetes Labels and OpenTelemetry Conventions
  • Connect Existing Prometheus and Grafana Dashboards to CloudWatch
Features (1)
  • Collect EKS Infrastructure Metrics with OTel Container Insights

Amazon CloudWatch now provides OTel Container Insights for Amazon EKS, collecting infrastructure metrics at 30-second granularity. It uses open-source receivers like cAdvisor and Kube State Metrics, and applies OpenTelemetry semantic conventions and Kubernetes labels for easier metric correlation.

Enhancements (2)
  • Correlate Metrics with Kubernetes Labels and OpenTelemetry Conventions

Metrics collected by Container Insights include OpenTelemetry semantic conventions and Kubernetes labels, enabling straightforward correlation across nodes, pods, and workloads using PromQL queries. Pre-built dashboards offer immediate visibility into cluster health and resource usage.

  • Connect Existing Prometheus and Grafana Dashboards to CloudWatch

The new CloudWatch PromQL endpoint allows users to connect their existing Prometheus and Grafana dashboards directly to CloudWatch, leveraging current monitoring setups.
