EC2 R8in, R8ib, R8idn, R8idb Instances Expand to New Regions

infraawsengineer
feature

Amazon EC2 R8in, R8ib, R8idn, and R8idb instances are now available in the Asia Pacific (Tokyo) and Europe (Frankfurt, Ireland) regions, offering enhanced performance for demanding workloads. Powered by custom Intel processors and AWS Nitro cards, these instances provide up to 43% better compute performance per vCPU and significantly higher network and EBS bandwidth than previous generations. They are suitable for workloads ranging from AI/ML caching and Telco applications to high-performance databases and data lakes, with specific instance types optimized for network or storage intensity.

  • New EC2 instance types available in additional regions
  • Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) support for clustered workloads
  • Enhanced network and storage performance for R8in/R8idn instances
  • High EBS bandwidth for R8ib/R8idb instances
Features (2)
  • New EC2 instance types available in additional regions

Amazon EC2 R8in, R8ib, R8idn, and R8idb instances, featuring custom Intel Xeon Scalable processors and AWS Nitro cards, are now deployed in the AWS Asia Pacific (Tokyo) and Europe (Frankfurt, Ireland) regions. These instances offer up to 43% better compute performance per vCPU compared to the previous generation R6in and R6idn instances.

  • Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) support for clustered workloads

The R8in, R8ib, R8idn, and R8idb instances support Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) networking on specific larger sizes (48xlarge, 96xlarge, metal-48xl, and metal-96xl). EFA aims to reduce latency and improve cluster performance for tightly coupled workloads.

Enhancements (2)
  • Enhanced network and storage performance for R8in/R8idn instances

R8in and R8idn instances provide up to 600 Gbps network bandwidth, the highest among enhanced networking EC2 instances. R8in instances are suited for real-time big data analytics, distributed web-scale in-memory caches, and Telco applications like 5G UPF, while R8idn instances are designed for network-intensive general-purpose workloads requiring local storage.

  • High EBS bandwidth for R8ib/R8idb instances

R8ib and R8idb instances deliver up to 300 Gbps EBS bandwidth, the highest among non-accelerated compute EC2 instances. R8ib instances are optimized for workloads benefiting from high block storage performance, such as high-performance file systems and NoSQL databases. R8idb instances are targeted at storage-intensive general-purpose workloads including large commercial databases and data lakes.
