EC2 Replace Root Volume now supports using an EBS volume

infraawsengineer
feature

Amazon EC2 now allows using an existing EBS volume as the target for replacing an instance's root volume, in addition to snapshots or AMIs. This new option simplifies patching and configuration updates for stateful workloads by eliminating intermediate snapshot or AMI creation steps, reducing overhead and speeding up the process. The feature is available in all commercial AWS Regions and AWS GovCloud (US) regions, benefiting customers who need to include specific metadata or software before boot.

Features (1)
  • Replace Root Volume can now use an existing EBS volume

Amazon EC2 introduces an option to replace an instance's root volume using an existing EBS volume, streamlining the process for stateful workloads. This enhancement removes the requirement to create snapshots or AMIs as intermediate steps, directly reducing operational overhead and accelerating updates.

Enhancements (1)
  • Reduced operational overhead for root volume patching

Customers previously had to capture volumes as snapshots or register them as AMIs before replacing root volumes. The new EBS volume option eliminates these intermediate steps, making it faster and simpler to apply OS patches and configuration changes without stopping the instance.

Notes (1)
  • Availability and getting started

The ability to use an EBS volume for replacing an EC2 instance root volume is now available across all commercial AWS Regions and AWS GovCloud (US) regions. Further instructions can be found in the Amazon EC2 User Guide.
