Google Cloud Backup and DR adds selective disk backup for Compute Engine VMs
Google Cloud's Backup and DR service now supports selective disk backup for Compute Engine instances. This allows users to exclude specific non-boot disks or back up only the boot disk, reducing backup size and complexity. Additionally, individual protected disks can be selectively restored from an instance backup, creating a new Persistent Disk volume without restoring the entire VM. This enhances flexibility and efficiency for managing VM backup and recovery strategies.

You can now configure selective disk backup for Compute Engine instances in a backup plan to exclude specific attached non-boot disks from virtual machine (VM) backups. You can configure selective disk backup by backing up only the boot disk ( boot-disk-only ) or by excluding disks that match specified label key-value pairs ( disk-exclusion-labels ). When you restore a VM from a selective disk backup, only the protected disks are restored.
