Amazon S3 Object Lock now offers variable retention through event holds, enabling write-once-read-many (WORM) protection for objects based on future triggering events like contract closings or audits. This feature allows users to meet specific event-based retention requirements while avoiding unnecessary data over-retention for compliance. Event holds can be managed at object, bucket, or batch levels, with fine-grained control via IAM and bucket policies. The capability is available in all AWS Regions at no extra cost and has been assessed for SEC, FINRA, and CFTC compliance.
