AWS has launched four new features for its Dynamic Image Transformation (DIT) solution for Amazon CloudFront, improving image optimization workflows. These enhancements include advanced smart cropping with custom label detection, and enhanced automatic image optimization that delivers appropriately sized images across devices using CloudFront's multi-tier device detection. An interactive image transformation playground is also introduced for testing policies, alongside achieving full feature parity between DIT's ECS and Lambda architectures. The solution is available in all commercial AWS regions and four opt-in regions.

Features (4)
  • Enhanced Smart Cropping with Custom Label Detection

Dynamic Image Transformation now offers advanced composition controls for smart cropping, which preserves products, text, logos, and custom objects within cropped images. This feature supports combining multiple detection methods, including faces, labels, text, logos, and custom Amazon Rekognition models, with configurable aspect ratios, padding, and gravity constraints.

  • Enhanced Automatic Image Optimization

DIT's automatic image optimization now utilizes CloudFront's multi-tier device detection and configurable fallbacks to deliver appropriately sized images across all browser and device types. This tiered detection approach extends right-sized image delivery beyond browsers to all device types, addressing previous gaps in optimization.

  • Interactive Image Transformation Playground

An interactive image transformation playground has been introduced, allowing customers to test and validate transformations. The playground displays transformed images with extended metrics, including original and output dimensions, format, file size, compression ratios, and processing time, to help validate policy performance.

  • Full Feature Parity for ECS and Lambda Architectures

Dynamic Image Transformation now achieves full feature parity between its ECS and Lambda architectures. This ensures consistent capabilities regardless of the underlying compute environment chosen for image transformation workloads.
