AWS launches system-managed write protection for Apache Iceberg materialized views
AWS has launched system-managed materialized views for Apache Iceberg, which precompute query results for reuse across engines. These views prevent unauthorized alterations by allowing only AWS Glue to write their data and definition, ensuring the computed result remains consistent. Stored as standard Iceberg tables in Amazon S3, they are refreshed by AWS Glue on a defined schedule and are readable by any Iceberg-compatible engine. This feature is available in all regions where Apache Iceberg materialized views are currently supported, enhancing data governance and sharing.

- System-managed write protection for Apache Iceberg materialized views
AWS Glue now enforces system-managed write protection for Apache Iceberg materialized views, ensuring that only Glue can alter the view's data and definition. This prevents unauthorized changes to precomputed query results, maintaining data consistency in your data lake regardless of S3 or catalog write access. The views are stored as standard Iceberg tables in Amazon S3 and refreshed on a schedule managed by AWS Glue.
