Azure Machine Learning: External Data Import & Connections Deprecated

Azure Machine Learning is deprecating its External Data Import and Data Connections features, including S3, Snowflake, and Azure SQL DB integrations, effective September 30, 2026. This change means existing connections will become unavailable, new imports cannot be created, and scheduled refreshes for existing imported assets will cease. Users are advised to migrate external data imports to Microsoft Fabric and utilize AzureML datastores for continued availability within AzureML.

  • External Data Import and Data Connections Deprecation

    Features for importing data from external sources like S3, Snowflake, and Azure SQL DB, along with external Data Connections in Azure Machine Learning (currently in preview), will be retired on September 30, 2026. After this date, these capabilities will no longer be accessible.

  • Impact on Existing Assets and Workflows

    Following the deprecation, existing external data connections will become unavailable, and users will be unable to create new data imports or add new external data connections. While pre-existing imported assets will remain accessible, any associated scheduled refreshes will stop functioning.

  • Recommended Migration Strategy

    To prevent disruptions in ML pipelines, users are recommended to migrate their external data imports to Microsoft Fabric. Subsequently, they should leverage AzureML datastores to make this data available within AzureML.
