Amazon RDS for SQL Server adds support for SQL Server 2025

Amazon RDS for SQL Server now supports SQL Server 2025, bringing AI integration directly into the database engine. This allows customers to invoke external REST endpoints from T-SQL, enabling secure integration with AWS services like Amazon Bedrock and SageMaker without application re-architecture. New features include a free developer edition, increased Standard Edition capacity, and a native vector data type for embeddings. Existing RDS users can upgrade, and on-premises users can migrate to take advantage of these capabilities.

  • Support for SQL Server 2025 added to Amazon RDS for SQL Server

    Amazon RDS for SQL Server now supports Microsoft SQL Server 2025 for Enterprise, Standard, and Developer editions. This version enables invocation of external REST endpoints from T-SQL, facilitating secure integration with AWS services like Amazon Bedrock, SageMaker, S3, and Lambda.

  • New SQL Server 2025 editions and capacity increases

    SQL Server 2025 introduces a free edition for development and testing (Standard Developer Edition) and increases Standard Edition capacity to 32 cores and 256 GB buffer pool memory. Standard Edition also now includes Resource Governor.

  • Native vector data type for embeddings

    SQL Server 2025 includes a new native vector data type, allowing for direct storage and querying of vector embeddings within the database.

  • Upgrade and migration paths to SQL Server 2025

    Customers running earlier SQL Server versions on RDS can upgrade by modifying the DB engine version. On-premises users can migrate to RDS for SQL Server 2025 to leverage its managed infrastructure and new capabilities.
