Open Service Mesh add-on for AKS to be retired Sept 30, 2027

The Open Service Mesh (OSM) add-on for Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) will be retired on September 30, 2027, following the archival of the OSM project. While security patches will be provided until then, no new features or minor version releases will be available. Users are advised to transition to the Istio service mesh add-on for AKS, which became Generally Available in February 2024, before the retirement date.

    The Open Service Mesh add-on for Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) will be retired on September 30, 2027, due to the archival of the upstream open-source project. Security patch updates will be provided until this date, but no new minor version releases or features will be available.

  • Transition to Istio add-on recommended

    Users can continue to use the existing Open Service Mesh add-on until September 30, 2027, or transition to the Istio service mesh add-on for AKS. The Istio add-on was released and became Generally Available on February 28, 2024.

  • Migration guidance available

    Migration guidance for transitioning from Open Service Mesh configurations to Istio is available. There are no changes in pricing between the two add-ons.
