RDS and Aurora add R8gd/M8gd instances in more regions
Amazon RDS and Aurora PostgreSQL now support R8gd and M8gd instances in 12 and 6 additional regions, respectively. These instances feature Optimized Reads with local NVMe SSDs, significantly improving throughput and price-performance for complex queries and index operations. Customers can deploy these instances via the AWS Console, CLI, or SDK. This enhancement targets users running complex workloads on Aurora PostgreSQL, RDS for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB.

Features (2) ›
- R8gd instances now available in 12 additional regions for RDS and Aurora
Amazon RDS and Aurora database instances using the R8gd type are now supported in twelve new regions, expanding availability for users seeking enhanced performance. These instances are compatible with Aurora PostgreSQL, RDS for PostgreSQL, RDS for MySQL, and RDS for MariaDB.
- M8gd instances added to 6 regions for Aurora PostgreSQL Optimized Reads
Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL databases can now utilize M8gd instances, which are available in six additional regions. This expansion allows more users to benefit from Optimized Reads, leveraging local NVMe SSD storage for improved performance.
Enhancements (3) ›
- Optimized Reads improve throughput and price-performance with local NVMe storage
R8gd and M8gd instances deliver up to 165% better throughput and 120% better price-performance for Aurora PostgreSQL compared to R6g instances. Optimized Reads utilizes local NVMe-based SSDs for ephemeral data, reducing network access and query latency, especially for complex queries and index rebuilds.
- Aurora PostgreSQL Optimized Reads extend caching with local storage
For I/O-Optimized Aurora PostgreSQL configurations, Optimized Reads instances use local storage to cache database pages evicted from memory. This enhances performance by speeding up subsequent retrievals of frequently accessed data.
- Easily enable Optimized Reads on existing or new databases
Customers can adopt Optimized Reads by modifying existing Aurora and RDS databases or creating new ones with R8gd or M8gd instances. This can be done through the AWS Management Console, CLI, and SDK, making the transition straightforward.
