AWS launches EC2 T8i instances for low-cost burstable workloads
AWS has launched Amazon EC2 T8i instances, a new family of low-cost burstable compute instances now generally available. Powered by custom 6th-generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors (Granite Rapids), they offer up to 30% better price performance and 70% higher compute performance than T3 instances. These instances are designed for low-to-moderate CPU utilization workloads, including microservices, development environments, and low-traffic websites. T8i instances are available in multiple AWS regions, support On-Demand and Spot purchasing, and include t8i.micro and t8i.small under the AWS Free Tier.

- General Availability of EC2 T8i Instances
AWS has announced the general availability of new low-cost burstable Amazon EC2 T8i instances, powered by custom 6th-gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processors (Granite Rapids). These instances are among the lowest-cost EC2 offerings and are designed for a variety of low-to-moderate CPU utilization workloads.
- Instance Specifications and Credit System
T8i instances come in four sizes (nano, micro, small, medium), each with two vCPUs and unique vCPU-to-memory ratios not found in other EC2 instances. They utilize the CPU credit system with both Standard and Unlimited modes, with Unlimited mode as the default.
Enhancements (1) ›
- Improved Price Performance and Compute
T8i instances deliver up to 30% better price performance and 70% higher compute performance compared to previous generation T3 instances. They also offer up to 1.25x higher network bandwidth and 2.4x higher EBS bandwidth.
Notes (2) ›
- Target Workloads & Seamless T3 Upgrade
These instances are ideal for workloads like freemium services, development environments, microservices, and low-traffic websites. Existing T3 customers can seamlessly upgrade to T8i instances, which leverage the same CPU credit system and familiar compute options.
- Regional Availability & Purchase Options
Amazon EC2 T8i instances are available today across multiple AWS regions, including the US, Asia Pacific, Canada, and Europe. They can be purchased On-Demand and as Spot instances, with t8i.micro and t8i.small instances also available under the AWS Free Tier.
