EC2 Dedicated Hosts support host resource groups without self-managed licenses

Amazon EC2 Dedicated Hosts now allow creating Host Resource Groups (HRGs) without requiring self-managed licenses and AMI associations via AWS License Manager. This change offers greater flexibility for EC2 Mac Instances and hardware-isolation use cases. Customers can now choose to uncheck a restriction option during HRG creation in the EC2 console or via the AWS CLI. This feature is available in all AWS Regions supporting HRGs.

  • EC2 Dedicated Hosts enable HRGs without self-managed licenses

    Customers can now create Host Resource Groups (HRGs) for EC2 Dedicated Hosts without the prior necessity of creating Self-Managed Licenses (SMLs) and associating AMIs through AWS License Manager. This simplifies deployment for users requiring hardware-level isolation or for EC2 Mac Instances.

  • BYOL workloads retain SML capabilities for license tracking

    Customers with Bring Your Own License (BYOL) workloads can continue to leverage SMLs when creating HRGs. This ensures that only instances from specified AMIs can be launched on the host and allows for tracking of host-level license consumption.

  • New option to create HRGs without SML restriction

    To create an HRG without SML, users can uncheck the 'Restrict to AMIs associated with self-managed license' option in the EC2 Console or set the instance-launch-option to 'license-configuration-required' via the AWS CLI. This feature is available in all AWS Regions where HRGs are supported.
